In Greek mythology, Dionysus (also known as Bacchus) decided to seduce the beautiful Erigone by transforming himself into a cluster of grapes. In this scene, she is holding the thyrse, a symbol of Bacchanalia. This erotic scene is displayed on the front of the cup, and the other half is decorated with gilded, flowering branches on a blue background.
